Giresun University’s Tirebolu Faculty of Communication hosted Haldun Domaç, a veteran sports journalist and television commentator. During the talk, which attracted considerable interest from students, participants discussed the past and present of sports journalism, the impact of industrial football on the media, and the dynamics of digital broadcasting.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yağbasan, Dean of the Tirebolu Faculty of Communication, emphasized the importance of bringing leading professionals from the industry together with students to help them develop their professional vision. Yağbasan thanked Haldun Domaç for his participation and the academics who contributed to organizing the event.
Haldun Domaç shared his professional journey and discussed structural changes in the media industry. Noting that print media has suffered declining circulation and traditional television broadcasting is rapidly transforming in response to new media, Domaç stated:
“In the past, print media and television offered extensive employment opportunities. However, today, digital platforms, YouTube, and social media have become central to sports journalism. As future communication professionals, you must turn your focus toward new media.”
Domaç noted that football has become a dominant field worldwide, overshadowing other sports. He emphasized that the commercialization of football has also restricted journalistic practices.
Pointing out that direct access to athletes and clubs is becoming increasingly difficult, Domaç said that clubs’ growing reliance on agents and corporate intermediaries in their dealings with the media has undermined on-the-ground sports reporting.
Following his presentation, Domaç answered students’ questions and highlighted the importance of foreign language proficiency and developing expertise across multiple sports disciplines.
“In today’s globalized sports world, English is no longer a choice but a necessity. In addition, you should not limit yourselves to football; instead, identify areas of specialization among Olympic sports. Target national media outlets for internship opportunities, actively seek opportunities, and remain determined and consistent in producing content.”
The event concluded with Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yağbasan presenting Haldun Domaç with a commemorative plaque in appreciation of his participation, followed by a group photograph.
